Official Opening of the new biology building

The University of Vienna Biology Building (UBB) officially starts into full operation: The University of Vienna and the Bundesimmobiliengesellschaft (BIG), i.e., the Federal Real Estate Company, officially inaugurated the new biology building in the third district. The Federal Minister of Education, Science and Research, Heinz Faßmann, and the Mayor of the City of Vienna, Michael Ludwig, attended the ceremony on October 8th. More than 5,000 students and 500 employees – 150 of them belonging to the CMESS – have found a new academic home here.

The UBB sets new standards, emphasized Hans-Peter Weiss, CEO of BIG. It is designed as a climate-friendly building. The floor plan was planned flexibly; room sizes can be adjusted as needed. Sustainable and durable materials have been chosen for construction. The laboratory air is used for heat recovery. Accordingly, the city's mayor expressed his enthusiasm: Michael Ludwig emphasized that the city and the University of Vienna offer ideal conditions for international research companies in the fields of pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and medicine.

Federal Minister Heinz Faßmann praised the building as modern, functional, aesthetic and sustainable. He emphasized the advantages resulting from the proximity to the Vienna BioCenter. Spatial proximity is important for research, he said - knowledge is passed on not only through formal, but also casual contacts. CMESS Head Andreas Richter also emphasized that cooperation and exchange among people, along with excellent infrastructure, are at the heart of research: "Research needs creativity and the building offers great opportunties to be creative together.”
